RULES

1. GENERAL RULES
For the general rules see Elftown Creature Marathon#RULES!

2. EACH MEMBER MAY SUBMIT ONE (1) ENTRY
Exceptions might be offered if there is a valid reason for it. But, if you do submit more than one image, you will greatly lower your chance of winning, as the votes for your style will be spread out on two entries.

3. IMAGES MUST BE UPLOADED TO ELFTOWN.

Note: For images larger than 500 pixels wide, you will need wikiprivs to upload these larger images to a wiki page.

4. THEME
Any entry that does not follow the "Dragon theme", will be removed.

5. MEDIUM
All mediums, excepting photography (and/or manipulations) and animations will be accepted.

REMEMBER THE GOAL: We want the BEST QUALITY images to represent Elftown having the best Dragon Page on the Internet as part of the Elftown Creature Marathon!

REMINDER: We want the MOST TYPICAL Dragon images and the BEST QUALITY and images should be LARGE to appreciate and see the detail!!!

Note: Baby and baby looking dragons, dragons WITHOUT wings, and ANTHRO dragons WILL NOT be considered as TYPICAL DRAGONS.

If you have art of atypical dragons, you're welcome to submit them here, but we'll mark them as outside of contest.

Reward

Aside from the regular rewards, as mentioned on Elftown Creature Marathon, the winner will receive credit for contributing to what we hope will be the best Dragon-page on the entire Internet.

Use as you wish, critique if you will. This is what a Dragon should be. Dedicated to [Firous], [K'jesrya], and [xido]

30. [Paul Doyle]
<img30*0:stuff/11046.jpg>
<img300*0:stuff/11046_DragonColoringPageColored.jpg>
Quickest dragon I've drawn and colored in years, and done with (for me) ridiculously wild speed. Not technically sharp, but gleefully fun. The tiny ink image thumbnail is free to use, by the way, and kept simple for kids of all ages. Will donate copy of inked thumbnail to Elf12 if that's appropriate.

31. [Yuriona] Blue dragon drawn completely in AutoCAD 10, coloured in Paintshop Pro 7
<img300*0:stuff/autocadbluedragon.jpg>
<img30*0:stuff/the%20mommy%20dragon-2.jpg> <- wanted to enter this one but couldn't finish in time. T_T

32. [Zab]. Drawn with pencils, coloured in photoshop. I hope I'm entering in time and that older works were allowed.

2007-10-08 [Iske]: wow [crikketcandy] that one is really great

2007-10-08 [Eyonic]: rawr, I added mine

2007-10-08 [Iske]: cool one [Eyonic]

2007-10-08 [Artsieladie]: I'm liking all the dragons! <img:stuff/dand-gif.gif>

2007-10-08 [Iske]: me too , always wanted one to keep in my backyard but.... ;(

2007-10-08 [Eyonic]: lol, me too

2007-10-08 [Artsieladie]: Now that would be cool! Would have very little trouble from harassing neighbors! <img:stuff/sutN.gif>

2007-10-08 [JajaJulie]: Thank you [The Monochrome Rainbow] I used watercolors and colored pencils. :) And thank you too, [Maeve104]:D

2007-10-08 [Artsieladie]: Nicely combined techniques, [JajaJulie]! :D

2007-10-08 [JajaJulie]: Thank you :D

2007-10-08 [crikketcandy]: Thanks Iske ^.^

2007-10-09 [Remos Page]: maybe i should put one in <img:http://elftown.eu/stuff/sutN.gif>

2007-10-09 [The Monochrome Rainbow]: mine is watercolor pencils and acrylics.

2007-10-10 [Eyonic]: mine is simply pencil that I smeared on the computer

2007-10-11 [H3_six]: H3 says, '[crikketcandy] has mad dragon drawing skillz!' then walks away.

2007-10-11 [Lady of Lore]: Lol, I concurr H3 ^_^

2007-10-11 [crikketcandy]: <img:img/mood/61513_1190556007.png> Oh my, thank you. All of the entries have been fantastic so far, and I can't wait to see more.

2007-10-11 [Artsieladie]: I agree on both counts! <img:stuff/dand-gif.gif>

2007-10-12 [The Monochrome Rainbow]: i have been awaiting the dragon section of the ECM ever since the ECM started. I'm glad it's finally here, and being fanatical as i am about dragons, i can't wait to see what we get either. i expect a lot of entries, being as popular as they are in art and literature.

2007-10-12 [Yuriona]: I'm working on inking the Mommy dragon Artsie but its slow going. *sighs*

2007-10-12 [Artsieladie]: Yes, looking forward to lots of entries! :D Not to worry, Yuri, b/c you have plenty of time. This runs until Feb. 1, 2008. :D

2007-10-12 [Yuriona]: LOL! I know but I would rather get it done sooner rather than later. :)

2007-10-12 [Artsieladie]: Yeah, I know what you mean. <img:stuff/cheshmak.gif>

2007-10-12 [The Monochrome Rainbow]: don't you mean feb of 2008?

2007-10-12 [Yuriona]: Shhhh! Quiet you! *gently pokes Monochrome Rainbow* <img:stuff/cheshmak.gif>

2007-10-12 [Artsieladie]: Yea, I do. Fixed. Thanks for pointing that out. *laughs* Silly me! >..<

2007-10-12 [Artsieladie]: [Phoenix_fire34], I removed your image, b/c it wasn't uploaded to Elftown. If you upload it to Elftown, you may re-enter it.

2007-10-14 [The Monochrome Rainbow]: well, once the new year rolls around, i know it'll take me a few weeks to put the right year when i date-mark something.

2007-10-14 [Artsieladie]: Yeah, the same here. :P

2007-10-18 [Paul Doyle]: Most interesting . . .

2007-10-30 [DarkJenni]: placed mine up! :)

2007-11-12 [J. "dragonruler" Rouse]: Um... what gives with the image formatting?

2007-11-12 [Yuriona]: Did you read the alarm about some images not working temporarily due to the hardware upgrades??

2007-11-14 [J. "dragonruler" Rouse]: Guess I missed that one..

2007-12-01 [Artsieladie]: [Winchester143980], are you having some difficulty placing your image on the page? If I can help, let me know. ;)

2007-12-11 [Artsieladie]: [jmjacques], do you have a larger image? [Hedda] likes large images! You will need uploading privs or use the button at the top, right of center in your presentation that says, "Upload a folder of images". :D

2007-12-25 [Urmando The Elfling]: Hm..... Interesting contest....hm....

2007-12-25 [Artsieladie]: Yes...'Tis we thinking about entering here, [Urmando The Elfling]? I would love to see your art here! Merry Christmas! :D

2007-12-25 [Urmando The Elfling]: Ok.... as I understand it correctly, I can enter with a 3D graphic dragon as well? (my Mandrake W.I.P. project) Merry Christmas 2 U 2!

2007-12-28 [nehirwen]: I've updated my dragon a bit, made it a bit larger *watches the reminder*
(and also tried to improve it somewhat more of course ^^)

anyway, I just love to see all these awesome dragon pictures everyone made here! :)

2007-12-28 [The Dizzy Raven]: There are a lot of good dragons posted up! ^_^

2007-12-28 [nehirwen]: well, you can't deny those big fat letters ;)

2007-12-29 [The Monochrome Rainbow]: yeah, fine print goes unnoticed by so many people. and in a lot of cases, they screw themselves over by not reading it. like loans...

2007-12-29 [xido]: Very interesting and fun entries so far. Does anyone have a favorite?

2007-12-29 [crikketcandy]: They're all good, but I'm loving [BinaryPhoenix]'s ^^

2007-12-29 [nehirwen]: I always read everything, even all the little letters of my assurance papers and agreements with my bank >.<
but yes, many people don't, they need the big fat letters, like the reminder here ;)

2007-12-29 [nehirwen]: [BinaryPhoenix]s entry is lovable indeed :) but I also like the dragon of [Artsieladie] ^^

2007-12-29 [nehirwen]: *agrees with Artsie* and you're welcome ;)

2008-01-02 [nehirwen]: I just keep changing my entry xD

2008-01-02 [nehirwen]: they stole it? O.o

2008-01-05 [Urmando The Elfling]: [nathie]... we have a winner here.....So Cool!

2008-01-13 [Mom]: Question...is a Leviathan a typical dragon?

2008-01-14 [Hedda]: Eh, what is it? This one Leviathan?

I would say no. It's not even a dragon, as far as I can tell. It's a sea monster and dragons aren't.

2008-01-14 [Mom]: Thank you...

2008-01-22 [Mom]: Gosh I hope I can get my entry done on time...need more time*Rush, rush, rush*

2008-01-23 [J. "dragonruler" Rouse]: I am going to replace my current entry.

2008-01-23 [J. "dragonruler" Rouse]: ...and voila!

2008-01-24 [Morphea]: is it allowed to have ppl together with the dragon or must it be the dragon alone?

2008-01-25 [Morphea]: I have the pic put in my house now .......can I enter that one or is it not allowed?

2008-01-25 [Morphea]: Oki....Thank you :)

2008-01-25 [M. P. Ness]: exceptions, you said, in the rules, for entering more than one dragon?

what if the styles are vastly different?
like, one's ink, or pencil and the other is digital?

just curious really...
I don't really care about winning all that much...
participation is fun enough
:)

Also, (amended previous message)...are anthro-ish dragons not permitted?

2008-01-25 [windowframe]: They're definitely not typical dragons, which is what the contest is after.

2008-01-26 [M. P. Ness]: gotchya.
:)
thankye!

2008-01-26 [Morphea]: ok Thank you for taking the time to discuss it :)

2008-01-27 [Lite]: You might have to brighten your screen to view my pic. I'm working on a laptop so the pic looks much lighter to me.

2008-01-27 [The Monochrome Rainbow]: it looks a heck of a lot like a painting by Ciruelo Cabral. http://www.dac-editions.com/dragonl.htm

an emulation?

2008-01-27 [Lite]: Ya... I used a pic as referance, but I dunno who did it...

2008-01-27 [The Monochrome Rainbow]: I've been a fan of Ciruelo and many of the other dragon artists for some time now. Whelan is my all-time favorite though. I doubt I'll ever paint on par with him, but it isn't a bad goal to set for ones self.

2008-01-27 [Lite]: Yah... Its my screen settings... When I made the pic my screen was very bright so I'm guessing people can't see it although I can...

2008-01-27 [Lite]: (to monochrome) Nice to know who did the pic!

2008-01-27 [The Monochrome Rainbow]: i hate when i find a pic i like, and for the life of me cannot figure out who the artist is. it drives me batty.

2008-01-27 [Lite]: :) is it better now?

2008-01-27 [The Monochrome Rainbow]: much better contrast now.

2008-01-27 [Iske]: cookies cookies hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

2008-01-29 [Hedda]: [Morphea]: The image
<img100*0:img/drawing/184122_1201245066.jpg>
is almost OK, but it's a child dragon and therefore the typical huge fire-breathing fantasy monster that eats knights for breakfast.

It's a great illustration of why the poor dragons died out though <img:stuff/mood21-gif.gif>

2008-01-29 [Hedda]: Please submit it, but we'll mark it as atypical. <img:stuff/dand-gif.gif>

2008-01-29 [Morphea]: [Hedda] I have submitted my atypical great illustration of why the poor dragons died out ;)........And again thanks for taking the time to consider and discussing it :)

2008-01-29 [Morphea]: hehe [Artsie_ladie] I know you did :D I had planned to submit when you said I could but something always came in the way.....Competitions are fun....although I am sad that I dont have the time to produce a real dragon......so for this time that work will have to do ;)

2008-01-29 [Morphea]: oh yeah you can count on it....:)

2008-01-31 [The Monochrome Rainbow]: so -as in my picture- with no other thing in there for size comparison, how is it determined whether my dragon is big or teensy?

2008-01-31 [J. "dragonruler" Rouse]: They didn't argue about it and it doesn't appear as such, Rainbow. You should be just fine since you didn't get one of the bold-faced notices.

2008-01-31 [Paul Doyle]: I thought this was why the dragons died out (mildly naughty pic): http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v212/fullywired/why-dragons-died-out.jpg

2008-01-31 [Morphea]: LOl

2008-01-31 [The Monochrome Rainbow]: wow. that is one of the great paleontological mysteries. nobody knows exactly how stegosaurus pulled it off.

2008-01-31 [Cia_mar]: when the deadline says it is open till feb 1st... does that mean that we have until midnight... as in 10 hours from now when it turns feb 1st... or do we have all day of feb first till that midnight???

2008-01-31 [BinaryPhoenix]: Nice entry Moira! ^__^

2008-01-31 [Yuriona]: *sighs* well so much for getting my entry for this done in time. >< Oh well...

2008-01-31 [moira hawthorne]: thx u [BinaryPhoenix] tried my hardiest to get it in on time...
if it is alright with you [Artsieladie] I'll try to get a more 'textured' version up ...maybe the morning of Feb 1st... just as I do art at night...

2008-01-31 [Cia_mar]: i made it... well, ahead of the deadline.. just... though who knows between now and tomorrow, i may actually add or change small details. but as of right now, i am pretty satisfied with it...

2008-02-01 [moira hawthorne]: ok Im 1/2 way to where I want the texture to be... but cant work any more till Eirikr is in bed... if that ok I load the final slight after ET midnight...

2008-02-01 [Cia_mar]: i dont think i want to see scales again for a bit though.... still i am pleased with it...thanks artsie, for the thumbs up!

2008-02-01 [DarkJenni]: im back!! :)

2008-02-01 [BinaryPhoenix]: This is going to be one tough contest to vote for! Everyone has entered magnificent entries!!!

2008-02-01 [Cia_mar]: havent they though!!!

2008-02-01 [moira hawthorne]: ooooh gods! there are so many I love!

2008-02-01 [moira hawthorne]: mine is finally finished... thxs artsie... <img:stuff/aodh%20chibi%20blush.png><img:stuff/%20sm%20cut%20out%20heart.png>

2008-02-01 [Mom]: Amazing entries everyone...simply amazing. I could pick out "a" favorite if I had to. Maybe 5 or 6 ....or 7...or 8. <img:stuff/zabuN-gif.gif>

2008-02-01 [moira hawthorne]: minimum 10 I really like! thats the closest I cant get! of the one's that are being allowed! I love some of the non stereotyped ones aswell!

2008-02-01 [nehirwen]: haha yeah, I deleted it again, because I found the name already. ;)
I just put the member number from the entry link in the member searcher. ;)
And seeing her art, I thought 'this must be the right one' ^^

2008-02-01 [Yuriona]: I could put up the initial sketch of the dragon I wanted to submit just so you guys can see but its rough so its ok if it doesn't make the poll. I started inking it but life interfered with me finishing it in time for the contest. *sighs*

2008-02-01 [windowframe]: Nice sketch, though. :O

2008-02-01 [Yuriona]: Thanks. ^_^ Sorry that the new coloured entry is so small. Its an old drawing and I can't find the original any more. ><

2008-02-01 [Iske]: Ow Yeah :)

2008-02-01 [moira hawthorne]: about [The Dizzy Raven]'s crop of dragon... <img100*0:http://elftown.eu/img/drawing/166925_1159905549.jpg>
looks like this still un finished drawing... <img100*0:http://elftown.eu/img/photo/166925_1147277417.jpg> ... but even tho the ground isnt finish ... the dragon is so awesome... maybe her entry could be updated with this one... for the enrichment of the wiki!

2008-02-01 [moira hawthorne]: she hasnt been on for 3 days... :(

2008-02-01 [nehirwen]: It's not the exact same dragon, but she is of course allowed to update her current entry if she likes! That's up to her indeed. :)

2008-02-01 [moira hawthorne]: I thought them were the same drawing at first... till I saw them together... than I edited my comment...

2008-02-01 [nehirwen]: Yes I see.

2008-02-01 [moira hawthorne]: maybe someone who knows her can get her to come on ET,... oh my brain hurts!

2008-02-01 [J. "dragonruler" Rouse]: Holy crap! Talk about late entries..

2008-02-01 [Zab]: x) I didn't get time to make a new one.. >_> somehow I didn't want to enter any more contests at all, then I suddenly had the urge to try it..

2008-02-01 [Zab]: xD I wish I got the idea before..I have improved a little. x)

2008-02-01 [K'jesrya]: entry for [Katja] edited (with full artist permission) by [K'jesrya]

2008-02-02 [Hedda]: <img300*0:stuff/dragon2_watermark.jpg> and <img300*0:stuff/greendrag.jpg> are my favorites. They are both on the border of what I consider "typical" dragons, but together they explain "dragons" completely.

2008-02-02 [The Dizzy Raven]: you think I should?

2008-02-02 [Yuriona]: Nuts... I knew I should have gotten my other drawing done. LOL!

2008-02-02 [Yuriona]: If this is a marathon, does that mean it may reopen at some time for new entries?

2008-02-02 [The Monochrome Rainbow]: i'm anxious to see when the poll will be going up.

2008-02-02 [J. "dragonruler" Rouse]: Cool.. I love it when they say which ones are their favorites... makes the rest of us feel awesome.

2008-02-02 [Paul Doyle]: Ah, the "trail mix" philosophy!

*Has some popcorn instead, for after-work snack*

2008-02-03 [Demon Epona]: Darn. Is the 2008-2-1 deadline strict, or could I still enter my dragon? My friend told me about this contest, but not until today, the 2nd.
If I can still enter, my image is:
<img300*0:http://elftown.eu/img/drawing/174707_1201582139.jpg>
It's a quick scan because I was rushed a few weeks ago when I uploaded it, but that's the only scan I have since I've not had the chance to touch it up. Sorry.

2008-02-03 [Hedda]: [Yuriona] and [Artsieladie]: This contest will not take more entries when we have started voting ([Demon Epona] can get the image in even though we would prefer a finished piece.), but the Dragon wiki-page will always be open for more art, text and subpages. And we might of course have another dragon art contest (I find that pretty likely actually).

2008-02-03 [Yuriona]: =) Sounds good to me too!

2008-02-03 [nehirwen]: Here the same! :)

*dances with Artsie* ;)

2008-02-03 [moira hawthorne]: we could have contest for UN typical dragons... as well as all the other ECM featured creatures

2008-02-03 [Yuriona]: Hmm... and ECM Dragon Kin type contest for creatures like Leviathin and Wyvern? ^__^

2008-02-03 [windowframe]: My idea of a Leviathan is nothing like a dragon. :P but that's the beauty of the leviathan, it's been described so little that you can get away with a lot. I tend to think of it as more whale-like.

2008-02-03 [Yuriona]: I always thought Leviathan would be similar to a plesiosaur acually or even mosasaur.

2008-02-03 [windowframe]: Guess we should throw out the idea of atypical entries for that one. :P

2008-02-03 [The Monochrome Rainbow]: yeah, i think the only defining feature would be "aquatic" everything else is so vague.

2008-02-04 [Mom]: I always thought of a Leviathan as a Water Dragon.=\

2008-02-04 [blackphoenix]: heh i always picture leviathan as some giant sea serpent/monster mybe bit shark like so yeah no real atypical design for him XD

2008-02-04 [The Monochrome Rainbow]: i always pictured something long and serpent-like, like a big sinuous aquatic dragon. lots of fins and such. miles long. I'd have to go back and read the literature about the leviathan to really get it.

2008-02-04 [Cia_mar]: hmmm i guess i always thought of it being like the loch ness monster!

2008-02-04 [Paul Doyle]: I think if there was a scientific equivalent of the Leviathan, this prehistoric beastie might be the one. If you remember Walking With Dinosaurs on the BBC or elsewhere, you certainly remember this guy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liopleurodon

2008-02-04 [blackphoenix]: Ooo yes paul hehe, those were naty beasties.

2008-02-04 [The Monochrome Rainbow]: i always wished dinos were still around, it would be magnificent to see some of them in real life. Liopluerodon was one of my favorite aquatic ones.

2008-02-04 [Yuriona]: *coughLochNesscough* LOL!

2008-02-04 [The Monochrome Rainbow]: yeah, but there is also so much debate about what nessie actually looks like too. is she a plesiosaur, or something more something more serpent-like? modern opinion seems to sway more towards her being a leftover plesiosaur.

2008-02-04 [Yuriona]: I don't know... the thing that gets me is that as far as anyone knows, the plesiosaur lived in an ancient ocean - salt water I'm assuming. All of the inland bodies of water that are reputed to have a 'monster' - Lake Champlain, a mountain lake in Argentina, Lake Okanagan and Loch Ness - are all fresh water. O_o From what I know, it is not easy for most salt water creatures to exist in fresh water so perhaps Nessie and the others are not plesiosaurs but evolved descendants of those dinosaurs.

Then again the coelocanth was believed to have gone extinct at the same time as the plesiosaur and they found a living specimen in the 1930's. :O

2008-02-04 [The Monochrome Rainbow]: true, and some creatures can survive fresh or salt, but they are relatively few. Salmon and bull sharks are known to transition. And many lakes are salty, but i'm not sure which ones are and are not, maybe Loch ness was at some point, and slowly became fresh (though it's usually the other way around) who knows?

2008-02-04 [The Monochrome Rainbow]: i'll believe that the Loch Ness Monster actually exists when I can put my own two hands on it, or see it with my own eyes.

2008-02-04 [Yuriona]: And lots of people feel that way. I'm not sure I believe one way or another but I find the possibility of creatures man has yet to discover both fascinating and highly plausible. ^__^

2008-02-04 [windowframe]: I agree, but maybe not in the limited space of Loch Ness. :P

2008-02-04 [Yuriona]: Oho... so you're that familiar with the loch's geography that you can say for certain that its too limited for a large creature to exist without man having definitive proof of its existence? Last I heard that Loch has never been completely charted simply because of its temperature, depth and the fact that the peat in it makes visibility almost zero.

2008-02-04 [windowframe]: er... what? Did I ever say that? :S Did I even say I was certain that we'd not find new creatures there? That was a wee bit aggressive. :/

2008-02-04 [Yuriona]: No you said "but maybe not in the limited space of Loch Ness" and my reply was an overly complex "why not?" as well as stating a few well known facts about the Loch and why its been so hard to say one way or the other if Nessie exists. Sorry if you misconstrued it as 'aggressive' when it wasn't intended as such. :P Don't go gettin' yer knickers in a knot over nothin'.

2008-02-04 [windowframe]: hardly. Takes more than a 'wee bit' of agression. ;) But it was the personalisation at the start "so you're that cocky", basically. :P

2008-02-04 [Yuriona]: Eh? Ya wanna fight then? Come on then, put up yer dukes! I'll fight ya! I'll fight ya with one paw tied behind my back!!

2008-02-04 [Lite]: paw...? *shudders*

2008-02-04 [Yuriona]: Never seen the classic Wizard of Oz? :O

2008-02-04 [nehirwen]: popcorn anyone? :p

2008-02-04 [crikketcandy]: I'd fight bare-fisted for a plesiosaur's honor, you betcha. :-D Or bear-fisted, as the case may be
Hmm, that's funny, my browser suggests "applesauce's" as a spelling correction for "plesiosaur's." Man, I can't tell you guys how many times I thought I wrote plesiosaur on my grocery list

2008-02-04 [Yuriona]: ROFL!! Applesauce...

2008-02-04 [windowframe]: I love applesauce! Nom, nom, nom. One of my favourite foods. :P I have it with everything.

2008-02-04 [Paul Doyle]: A sentient dragon-ish kind of creature that's not needlessly evil would be a very cool thing indeed, in my opinion. Just out of principle of course. It would flame the applesauce and then eat it ;-)

2008-02-05 [windowframe]: duuude, that would ruin it. :(

2008-02-05 [The Monochrome Rainbow]: ha ha ha, how do you know for sure it's a plesiosaur? and not some mutated aquatic snake? like godzilla?

2008-02-05 [Yuriona]: OMG!! That would be so COOL! XD I love Godzilla!!

2008-02-05 [The Monochrome Rainbow]: well, people have certainly polluted enough things through the centuries for it to be a chance.

2008-02-05 [blackphoenix]: heh as much as i'd love to believe theres a nessie the kinda lack of food for a big organism to live off kinda spoils whole thing. Lack of light in the loch means there isn't much for even fish to eat. Though i could be a safe refuge for s place to rest and sleep before going down some unknown channel to the sea. Or a place for young to grow up... XD woo ideas lol and yay for godzilla...makes me want to the watch the film again (1998 version)

2008-02-05 [The Monochrome Rainbow]: i don't know enough about the loch. Yeah, i guess high peat content in the water kinda puts a damper on things living there, there isn't a food chain big enough to support something that big. Are there rivers entering or leaving the loch? or other connected lochs?

I don't see why any individual would have survived the KT event, but it's fun to speculate. there would have to be a viable breeding population, and of a creature that size, it would definitely have been documented long before now. we'd have carcasses. something.

2008-02-05 [blackphoenix]: there are several lakes all over world with monsters attached to them XD
the loch has connections to the sea i believe but not veryt big ones. Its more of a too dark to support much waterplant life thus no big food chain. Yet maybe somewheres in the world there could be a nessie. besides we barely know whats in the ocean.

2008-02-05 [Yuriona]: Yeah that's for sure. Keep in mind that not too long ago, no one believed that there could be life in the depths of the ocean where there is no light but when the technology was finally developed to explore the deeper regions, they found that the opposite was true and that life was thriving there. And then there are the instances of the volcanic vents in the ocean floor that they believed were too harsh both in temperature and chemical composition for life to exist near them and again were proven wrong when they found a thriving ecosystem based around the vents. ^__^ Life is just amazing and mystifying at the same time.

Oh and don't forget the coelacanth again there [The Monochrome Rainbow] or even crocodiles. Both species survived the extinction of the dinosaurs after all; the coelacanth actually having believed to have gone extinct until one was caught in the 1930's.

2008-02-05 [moira hawthorne]: one there are plenty of fish in Loch ness...
http://www.nessie.co.uk/htm/about_loch_ness/fish.html
two Loch ness and the other lakes and rivers near divid Scotland from coast to coast provide a vast food source...
http://www.nessie.co.uk/htm/about_loch_ness/map.html
Three... peat in a lake doesnt hinder small aquatic life it bolsters it...

2008-02-05 [Yuriona]: Awesome link! :)

2008-02-05 [The Monochrome Rainbow]: Nobody ever thought crocs were extinct, though they are relics (as are sharks) A coelocanth is a relatively small and obscure animal, more suitable to going unnoticed for millenia. Nessie however, is a bit bigger, and in a more confined space than an ocean. Presumably, it's a reptile, but since nobody knows, a fish is feasible too. Maybe it's a big filter-feeder, like whales or paddlefishes, thats able to filter the smaller organisms that thrive on the peat, freshwater planktons, etc.

anybody ever read the book MEG by Steve Alten? it's a decent book about the exploration of some of the trenches, and they end up hauling up a previously-believed-extinct giant shark. work of fiction, but with a strong base in reality and science.

2008-02-05 [Yuriona]: Small?? O_O Coelacanth can grow easily over 4 feet long (1.3 meters) and weigh over 100lbs (50kg)!
<img200*0:http://www.mnh.si.edu/highlight/coelacanth/images/image_2_lg.jpg>
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coelacanth

Nope but I have read Sphere and watched Leviathan. :P I prefer science for facts and fiction for entertainment.

2008-02-05 [The Monochrome Rainbow]: small compared to the size of Nessie, and many other creatures. A four foot fish goes unnoticed next to a twenty foot shark, a hundred foot whale, or a who-knows-how-long Nessie. That and the tendency of the fish to live in deep and remote waters (volcanic caves) in a vast ocean, where it is less likely to come in contact with humans. Loch Ness, being a lake, and somewhat closer to human contact, its harder to believe something as big as "Nessie" (however big that may be) has gone undiscovered for the centuries (or more) that people have lived in the area.

However, being a reptile, and presumably cold-blooded, Nessie would require significantly less food than a warm-blooded counterpart, and therefore, less of a supporting food chain than say, an Orca, or other warm-blooded creature of comparable size.

2008-02-05 [Yuriona]: You might want to visit the link [moira hawthorne] provided and do some reading. Not all lakes are created equal after all. :P

2008-02-05 [The Monochrome Rainbow]: I visited, and Loch Ness seems more like a river, as far as fauna. Its hard to say what might be in there when we can't even pin a class on it. For all we know, Nessie could be a fish, reptile, amphibian, or mammal, I wouldn't even rule out bird. That much known about her/he/it, it would be hard to establish the basic needs of the creature, ex: what sort of food chain would be needed to support a viable population that was able to breed? You don't need enough fish just to feed one Nessie, but dozens, or hundreds. Many creatures live a long time (individually), but going with the dino theory, none live for millions of years. And people overfishing the sturgeon (that fish being the largest one listed), any significant decline could spell doom for anything whose diet was/is largely dependent on that fish.

2008-02-05 [Yuriona]: I am not so naive to think that Nessie is a creature that has survived millions of years. O_o I just think that its better to be open minded about things in a world we still no painfully little about. :P After all... isn't it the animals who are unable to adapt to a changing environment that become extinct? If Nessie and other such 'monsters' in lakes are in fact like the coelacanth i.e. descendants of a dinosaur age creature then one should consider that those animals are perfectly suited to living in such environments and can easily avoid perceived threats.
I believe too that the Loch exists over an anchient fault line but that that modern loch you visited is only 10,000 years old and was created by the last Ice age. That itself negates the possibility of a millions of years old dinosaur living there and suggesting that it was sealed in ice and thawed when the loch was created isn't feasible either since large creatures just don't freeze fast enough to prevent cell damage.
However, the geology of the rocks and such beneath the loch are more of a mystery as it has been suggested that there could be a vast system of underwater caves that are for the moment beyond our reach. As well, the loch is situated over an active faultline which suggests that the loch's size and shape are rarely constant for any long period of time in a geological sense.
There's just too many variables to take into consideration to be able to say there is no way a creature like Nessie could exist in the loch. Life almost always finds a way... especially in a species that is so old like crocodiles or coelacanth. Man on the other hand is pitifully young and primitive...

2008-02-05 [The Monochrome Rainbow]: no, only small amphibians, and some invertebrates pull off the freezing, thawing and still being alive act.now underwater caves could provide the means for something so large to go unnoticed, especially if it's a volcanic area. I think it's safe to assume that volcanic vents in freshwater are as fertile as any that we find in the oceans. Fault lines are certainly a place for that, And being a glacial lake (Yes, thats the right area for it) means it was recently located there, then where did it come from? I'm not saying it can't exist, merely that the odds are against it in almost every way. I'm a bit of a skeptic.

2008-02-05 [moira hawthorne]: dont know how many other people reading along are from Scotland... or have been there... but from having been there myself I can say... Loch Ness is damn BIG... and DEEP ... and forested along either side... a great place for anything big to stay unnoticed.

2008-02-05 [Yuriona]: LOL! You know that up until the last twenty years or so ago, scientists claimed that there couldn't be life on other planets because the odds were against it in every conceivable way at the time. Now though they're not so confident. ;)

2008-02-05 [The Monochrome Rainbow]: but there has been recorded human activity there for centuries. You yourself have been there, some people even live there, yet no reliable sightings or documentation, much less a carcass has ever been turned up. Many of the photos have been proven or admitted to be fakes. I'll believe it when I see a body.

2008-02-05 [The Monochrome Rainbow]: i think a lot of the scientists boast was backed by religious propaganda, about the no life on other planets, because they have found fossils of microorganisms on other planets in our own solar system, so it does exist off earth, or did. If it can happen once, it can happen again. I'm trying to remember something from my math class... a statistic about how many stars, and of those many, how many had planets, and of those many how many could have life. it was a pretty astounding number. how many stars have been discovered so far? thousands? millions? what are the odds ours is the only one harboring a living planet?

2008-02-05 [moira hawthorne]: in case there is going to be a 'Nessie like' contest...
maybe it would be helpful to save this website...
http://www.nessie.co.uk/index.html
so it doesnt get lost in comments.

2008-02-05 [The Monochrome Rainbow]: that would be fun, but we come back to the issue, of what exactly Nessie is, or leviathan?

2008-02-05 [Yuriona]: In outer space? :O Nope can't say I've been there. Haven't been to Scotland either for that matter. ;)
Seriously though, for ages no one believed in giant squid until a carcass was found and no one believed in gorillas until Jane Goodall discovered them. They had existed a long time in those habitats before humans realized they existed. Just because we haven't found solid proof yet, doesn't mean the creature can't exist. Besides, there's just too much subjective evidence from said human habitation (dating back to the 6th century in Nessie's case) to say its just a hoax or that there isn't anything to the legend other than imagination.

2008-02-05 [J. "dragonruler" Rouse]: Oo Wow... talk about deviation in conversation.

2008-02-06 [Paul Doyle]: Hmm, now I realize this totally off-the-wall, but didn't the Space Kidettes (you know, that really old cartoon) fight a space dragon? Or was that the Herculoids? I might be getting my 1960s cartoons mixed up again . . .

2008-02-06 [Cia_mar]: not sure.. sounds familiar though....

just wondering.. how long before things go to mainstreet voting??? any word on that???

2008-02-06 [The Monochrome Rainbow]: I keep wondering that myself. I'm anxious for voting to begin.

2008-02-06 [The Monochrome Rainbow]: instant gratification takes too long! ;)

2008-02-06 [moira hawthorne]: *puts out plates of cookiees and muffins and mugs of hotchocolate to soooth the savage beasts... artists*

2008-02-06 [moira hawthorne]: I use to carry licorice and cinnamon sticks in my pockets... better than candy

2008-02-06 [Demon Epona]: ^^ Okay. If there's going to be another contest, then you guys can take it out. It's finished, just not scanned and cropped properly, so in a sense, I guess it's not totaly done. ^^ Thanks again guys! I'll make a better one for next contest.

2008-02-18 [The Monochrome Rainbow]: The poll is up, but I notice many entries did not go to poll, even if they were not marked as non-poll entries...?

2008-02-18 [Cia_mar]: the notes of "non poll" was just to let the artist know that they would not be CONSIDERED for the MS poll... the rest all get to be considered, and then selected by private voting (i am assuming) by council as to which ones make it to the coveted MS vote...lol
they only have room for 10 or 15 i think... so once they have chosen what they consider the best to fit that number, the rest just dont make it any further... though with this contest, there is the hope that our images will still get to be used somewhere in the wikis dedicated to dragons...(am i correct in that assumption [Artsieladie]???

2008-02-18 [Katja]: Considering that this is intended to portray dragons as they are I believe that some applicants "chosen" by said party should be re-considered considering that a wyvern made it to the final vote when a blend of dragons did not. Though considering I drew, with pencil and pen, the piece to comfort companions earlier drug down in the forum for their opinions, I do not consider it waste, but, working as hard as I did I think that if applicable, each piece should be given a chance.

2008-02-18 [moira hawthorne]: I think yours Katja was very cool... a very good dragon!

2008-02-18 [windowframe]: Cia, you're right. Katja, if you had a concern about one of the entries, you should have mentioned it before the contest was closed and the poll was made. And each piece is given a chance.

2008-02-18 [Paul Doyle]: I'd just like to say that I hope these various ECM contests gather enough attention, enough momentum, to perhaps have a bigger and bolder contest of the same sort. "Bigger and bolder" is assuming this catches the attention of people outside ET. I would personally spend more far more time and energy for such a contest than I did in this one. This time around it provided me with an opportunity to creatively vent a lot of residual real-life frustrations, along with a convenient way to make my son (and whomever else!) a coloring page for a rainy day. For that alone, I am happy and happier to be surrounded by wonderful entries from cool people :)

2008-03-09 [Cia_mar]: congrats to the winners!

2008-03-09 [nehirwen]: Congrats indeed. :) <img:45154_1117568632.gif>

2009-07-11 [Kuruni]: ah damn! i missed this one!

2009-07-11 [nehirwen]: If you want you can make something for the ECM Closed Sessions' Submissions. :)

2010-02-26 [Artsieladie]: Please place the ownership of this page in hedda's name. Thank you.
